Although a small-sized city by comparison with other major settlements elsewhere in Europe and the rest of the world, Ljubljana nevertheless suffers its share of rush hour-related congestion. Q-Free Traffic Design has been helping DARS, the national highway operator, to mitigate some of the congestion issue by providing a solution which uses video-based queue detection to provide travel information in real time via variable message signs which are located on the city’s major bypass.
Work on the new solution was started in summer 2016 and delivery was completed in February this year. The completely automatic solution monitors the traffic levels on highway off-ramps. It was developed at DARS’s request as a part of the framework for the existing traffic management and control application, which is located in the Ljubljana-Dagomelj traffic control centre.
